Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids in 2026? What Boca Raton Seniors Should Know

“Does Medicare cover hearing aids?” is one of the most common questions we hear from patients in Boca Raton, and it is one of the most searched hearing questions on Google. With Medicare Open Enrollment running from October 15 to December 7, now is the ideal time to understand your options for 2027.

The short answer: Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover hearing aids or exams for fitting them. But that is not the whole story. Below, we break down what Medicare does pay for, where Medicare Advantage plans come in, and how to keep hearing aids affordable.

What Original Medicare Does Not Cover

Hearing aids have been excluded from Original Medicare since the program began. That exclusion still applies in 2026. Original Medicare also does not cover the exams used to prescribe, fit, or change hearing aids.

You may have read about the Medicare Hearing Aid Coverage Act (H.R. 500), which would remove that exclusion. The bill has been introduced in Congress, but it has not become law, so hearing aids remain uncovered under Original Medicare for now.

What Original Medicare Does Cover

Medicare Part B does cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when they are needed to help your doctor diagnose or treat a medical condition. Normally your doctor or another qualified provider orders these tests.

Since 2023, Medicare has also allowed beneficiaries to see an audiologist without a physician’s order once every 12 months for certain non-acute hearing assessments. That exception does not extend to hearing aid fittings or exams for the purpose of getting hearing aids, but it can make it easier to have your hearing evaluated.

Medicare Advantage: Where Most Seniors Find Hearing Benefits

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers and often include extra benefits that Original Medicare does not, such as hearing coverage. Many plans include some combination of:

  • A yearly routine hearing exam, sometimes at a low or $0 copay
  • An allowance or set copay toward hearing aids, often per ear
  • Discounts through a specific hearing aid network or vendor

Benefits vary widely from plan to plan, and even from year to year. Some plans require you to use specific providers or specific devices, and allowance amounts can be very different.

What to Check During Open Enrollment

If better hearing is a priority for next year, ask these questions when comparing plans:

  1. How much is the hearing aid allowance or copay, and is it per ear or per pair?
  2. How often can I use it? Many plans limit benefits to once every one to three years.
  3. Which providers are in network? Can you see the local hearing professional you trust?
  4. Which devices are included? Some plans limit you to certain brands or technology levels.
  5. Are follow-up visits, adjustments, and repairs included?

Other Ways to Lower the Cost of Hearing Aids

  • Private insurance and employer plans: Some include hearing aid benefits, especially newer plans.
  • FSA and HSA accounts: Hearing aids and batteries are generally eligible expenses.
  • Veterans benefits: Eligible veterans may receive hearing care through the VA.
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids: Since 2022, adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss can buy OTC hearing aids without a prescription. They can be a starting point, but they are not designed for more significant hearing loss and do not include professional fitting.
